Have you ever wanted to start your own SLP private practice? The transition from clinician to private practice owner comes with big decisions—what to start, when to start, and how to turn your vision into reality. Here are three key questions to consider as you embark on this journey.
#1- What Should I Start?
Starting a private practice allows you to provide high-quality, personalized care while having the freedom to create a practice that aligns with your values and expertise. Consider your ideal client population, service delivery model (in-person, telepractice, or hybrid), and whether you want to specialize in a particular area of speech-language pathology.
#2- When Should I Start?
Before launching your private practice, consider whether you have the time, money, and expertise:
Time – Running a practice requires wearing multiple hats. Are you prepared for the commitment of managing scheduling, billing, marketing, and client care?
Money – Evaluate your financial stability and the costs of starting your practice, including licensing, insurance, marketing, and office or telepractice setup.
Expertise – Having at least 3-5 years of clinical experience helps build confidence and credibility before stepping into private practice ownership.
#3- How Should I Start?
You don’t have to quit your current job immediately. Many SLPs start their private practice part-time, gradually building their caseload while maintaining financial stability. Taking small, strategic steps allows you to refine your services, establish business processes, and grow at a sustainable pace.
